FRENCH PRESS

What you'll need:

  • French press
  • Freshly roasted coffee beans
  • Grinder
  • Kettle
  • Timer
  • Stirring utensil
  • Mug or carafe

Instructions

  1. Measure your coffee
A general rule of thumb is to use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:15. For example, if you're using 30 grams of coffee, you'll need 450 grams (or milliliters) of water.

  2. Grind your coffee
Grind your coffee beans to a coarse consistency, similar to breadcrumbs. This ensures proper extraction and prevents over-extraction.

  3. Preheat the French press
Pour hot water into the French press to preheat it. Let it sit for about a minute, then discard the water.

  4. Add coffee
Add the ground coffee into the preheated French press.

  5. Heat the water
Heat water in a kettle to around 200°F (93°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring the water to a boil and let it sit for about 30 seconds to a minute to cool slightly.

  6. Pour the water
Slowly pour the hot water over the coffee grounds, ensuring all the grounds are saturated. Start a timer as soon as you begin pouring.

  7. Stir
Use a stirring utensil to gently stir the coffee grounds and water mixture. This helps ensure even extraction.

  8. Steep
Place the lid on the French press, but don't plunge yet. Let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes.

  9. Plunge
After 4 minutes, slowly press down the plunger. Apply gentle and even pressure to avoid forcing the grounds through the filter too quickly.

  10. Serve
Pour the brewed coffee into your mug or carafe immediately to prevent over-extraction.
  • Tips

    • Experiment with different coffee beans and grind sizes to find the perfect brew for your taste preferences.
    • Adjust the steeping time according to your taste. Shorter steeping times will result in a milder flavour, while longer steeping times will yield a stronger brew.
    • Clean your French press thoroughly after each use to maintain its quality and prevent any leftover grounds from affecting the flavour of future brews.
