FRENCH PRESS
What you'll need:
- French press
- Freshly roasted coffee beans
- Grinder
- Kettle
- Timer
- Stirring utensil
- Mug or carafe
Instructions
- Measure your coffee
A general rule of thumb is to use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:15. For example, if you're using 30 grams of coffee, you'll need 450 grams (or milliliters) of water.
- Grind your coffee
Grind your coffee beans to a coarse consistency, similar to breadcrumbs. This ensures proper extraction and prevents over-extraction.
- Preheat the French press
Pour hot water into the French press to preheat it. Let it sit for about a minute, then discard the water.
- Add coffee
Add the ground coffee into the preheated French press.
- Heat the water
Heat water in a kettle to around 200°F (93°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring the water to a boil and let it sit for about 30 seconds to a minute to cool slightly.
- Pour the water
Slowly pour the hot water over the coffee grounds, ensuring all the grounds are saturated. Start a timer as soon as you begin pouring.
- Stir
Use a stirring utensil to gently stir the coffee grounds and water mixture. This helps ensure even extraction.
- Steep
Place the lid on the French press, but don't plunge yet. Let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes.
- Plunge
After 4 minutes, slowly press down the plunger. Apply gentle and even pressure to avoid forcing the grounds through the filter too quickly.
- Serve
Pour the brewed coffee into your mug or carafe immediately to prevent over-extraction.

Tips
- Experiment with different coffee beans and grind sizes to find the perfect brew for your taste preferences.
- Adjust the steeping time according to your taste. Shorter steeping times will result in a milder flavour, while longer steeping times will yield a stronger brew.
- Clean your French press thoroughly after each use to maintain its quality and prevent any leftover grounds from affecting the flavour of future brews.
